Is Tottenham for Real?

The Premier League table is a pretty sight for Tottenham fans this week. Thanks to goal difference, Spurs are sitting at the top, ahead of Chelsea. And, just as exciting for them, they are ahead of Arsenal.

Of course, after only three games, it’s still very early in the season. But already people are wondering, is Tottenham for real?

They came out of the blocks with the best possible start by beating Liverpool, 2-1, in the surprise of the opening weekend. Then, they crushed Hull 5-1 and followed it up on Sunday with a tough 2-1 victory over West Ham. But a look at their schedule shows that things are about to get much more difficult. Sure, they have Birmingham next — and the way Spurs are playing, there’s no reason it shouldn’t mean another three points — but then come Manchester United and Chelsea in quick succession.

If that isn’t a test of your Premier League pedigree, then what is?

That said, United and Chelsea won’t be looking forward to those games either. Tottenham certainly has enough talent to worry both teams, from Luka Modric to Jermaine Defoe and Aaron Lennon. And in Harry Redknapp, Tottenham has a manager who specializes in turning clubs around. Just look at what he did for Portsmouth and West Ham before that.

If Spurs can come away with something to show for themselves (meaning anything but two losses, really) they may even consider themselves satisfied. If nothing else, they’ll have gotten three of the Big Four out of the way early on — only the hated Arsenal would remain — giving them at least couple of months to rack up points before they have to see them again.

A pair of defeats, however, could nip Spurs’ charge up the standings in the bud. Not taking any points for two games is enough to demoralize any squad, especially one that has not been near the top of the table for a long time.

We’re only a couple of weeks into the season, but Tottenham is already looking at a stretch that could set the tone for the rest of their campaign.
